The French beauty blogger, who just released a new book, 'Life Style Love,' dished on everything from where she finds inpiration to the challenge she's dying to take on next.
Garance Dore is known as a jack- of-all-trades in the fashion community. Illustrator, photographer, blogger, and now author are all titles on her overflowing resume.
The style maven's new book, Love Style Life, is one part memoir — she covers her childhood in the French region of Corsica, teenage years spent in the south of France and her fashion career in Paris and New York — and part girl-power inspiration featuring interviews with friends and style icons Emmanuelle Alt, Drew Barrymore, Diane Von Furstenberg and Jenna Lyons.
Pret-a-Reporter had a chance to catch up with the French beauty for a rapid-fire Q&A.
What inspired you to write a book?
The book was inspired from all the things I’ve learned from almost 10 years of doing my blog. The main thing is that great style comes from the inside — style is about the way we live our lives, the way we are with others and ourselves. And a little bit about clothes, of course. In the book, I covered that through stories of my life.
What do you hope young women will walk away thinking after reading your book?
I’ve been on my book tour and met a lot of my readers, and I am so happy about what they’re telling me about it. The book makes them feel very inspired, and energized about living the life they want. It’s exactly what I hoped young women would feel: a little bit more free to choose who they want to be and to trust themselves. They’re going to make it work.
Your blog (Garance Doré) soon will be celebrating 10 years! How does that make you feel? And tell me how the blog has evolved over the last decade with the developments in technology and social media.
I feel very proud, because it’s pretty amazing to be able to maintain a clear voice with all the noise there is today!
It’s a constant readjustment, but I am conscious that what’s most important is the vision and the way we cultivate it and make it grow. My message is about being your authentic self, so I want my brand to have the same ethic. Media trends come and go, but what you’re really saying is what stays.
What are two or three of your favorite pieces in your closet and where did you get them?
I am always looking for the perfect pair of jeans, and recently (like, three days ago!) I found a wonderful pair at Zara, I also love my Saint Laurent Lulu bag, it is a little piece of art to me. I also am pretty crazy about my Repetto Zizi, the shoes I’m wearing in about all of my Instagrams!
Tell us two or three of your must-have beauty products.
Do you have a certain store or restaurant (or both!) you look forward to visiting while you are in L.A.?
Well, whatever I do, I always end up at the Chateau, it seems to really be a polarizing place, and is has been for decades, hasn’t it? I also love Ten Over Six, Clare Vivier, Just One Eye … there are so many places!
So, you have written a book and have a successful blog. What challenge do you hope to take on next?
I would love to work on a TV series! I’ve been thinking about it for some time now.
What is a big mistake you have made in your personal or professional life and what did you learn from it?
Anytime I haven’t kept my innocent eyes open and each time I told myself “I know the drill” is a fail. You never really “know the drill." Things, people, situations change all the time. Keep an innocent eye!
